Earwax Removal and Management

One of the most common causes of troubled hearing is a buildup of earwax or, in medical terms, Cerumen. Cerumen, named for the sweat glands in the ear canal which secrete oil that protects the inner ear, and helps the migration of debris to the outer ear with the aid of very tiny, fine hairs.

Ear wax, in general, is normal, and a thin layer within the canal is actually protective because it helps prevent the growth of fungi and certain bacteria. An ear that is healthy will continually work to keep itself clean.

Does ear wax need to be removed?

If you produce excessive ear wax the problem can be prevented by a regular ear check up by our Audiologist, who can just gently lift out excess wax with a little ring and leave minimal healthy wax to protect the ear canal skin. Deeper wax or flaky wax may be removed with a suction machine. Sometimes improving your hearing is as simple as clearing your ear canal by removing impacted earwax. Our Certified Audiologist can perform professional ear wax removal to clients in the Akron, Ohio and surrounding area.

  • Excessive cerumen prevents adequate access to the ear canal for any audiological measurements
  • The presence of cerumen results in potentially misleading and/or inaccurate audiologic results
  • When cerumen interferes with the pre-selection, fitting, or operation of hearing instruments.
  • A common cause of hearing aid feedback or whistling is excessive ear wax. Our Audiologist can resolve this type of feedback or whistling be removing the excessive ear wax.

Please call our office, at 330-434-5101 and schedule an appointment with our Audiologist for a thorough ear examination to determine if you have excess earwax or possibly a hearing loss.
